The Pilbara and Kimberley regions of Western Australia are undergoing unprecedented growth through mining, oil and gas production and associated infrastructural and industrial development. Marine environments other than coral reefs have received little research focus in these regions although tropical algal and seagrass beds can account for large biomass in some areas and seasonally. Their role in both supplying fixed carbon locally and regionally and as a habitat for a range of benthic and pelagic organisms is poorly understood.

We are looking for a dynamic researcher who can take a lead role in the study of the spatial ecology and ecosystem role of benthic primary producers (corals, seagrass and macroalgae) in the Pilbara and Kimberley regions. This individual will demonstrate their ability to work as a component of a larger multi-disciplinary team of oceanographers, coral ecologists and fish ecologists from AIMS who presently undertake a range of research programs in these regions. Applicants must have a PhD in Marine Plant Ecology or related field.

This position is co-funded between the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) and The University of Western Australia (UWA).

For further information regarding the position please contact Professor Gary Kendrick 6488 3998 or email gary.kendrick@uwa.edu.au or Dr Andrew Heyward on 6369 4038 or email a.heyward@aims.gov.au.

APPLICATION DETAILS: The position description follows. Written applications quoting the reference number, personal contact details, qualifications and experience, along with contact details of three referees should be sent to Director, Human Resources, The University of Western Australia, M350, 35 Stirling Highway, Crawley WA 6009 or emailed to jobs@uwa.edu.au by the closing date.
